Experience Live Plein Air Painting in Door County at Plum Bottom Gallery’s Annual Event

Saturday, August 16 | 11 AM – 2 PM | Plum Bottom Road Location | Free Event

Looking for a unique way to experience art in Door County this summer? Don’t miss Plein Air Day at Plum Bottom Gallery, happening Saturday, August 16 from 11 AM – 2 PM at our original Plum Bottom Road location in Egg Harbor.

This free, family-friendly event brings together four talented artists who will be painting live outdoors across 20 acres of lush prairies, gardens, and winding trails. It’s the perfect opportunity to see how fine art is created from start to finish — surrounded by the natural beauty that has inspired generations of artists in Door County.

What Is Plein Air Painting?

“Plein air” is a French term meaning “in the open air.” It refers to the act of painting outdoors, capturing landscapes and changing light in real time. This tradition has deep roots in Door County’s art history, dating back more than a century, and continues to thrive among the region’s vibrant community of painters.

Meet the Artists Painting Live at This Year’s Event

We’re thrilled to welcome four exceptional artists to this year’s Plein Air Day:

  • Stephanie Lord – A Door County artist known for her expressive color palette and bold brushwork. Her landscapes reflect the shifting seasons and light of the peninsula.

  • Mary White – Another Door County favorite, Mary’s work blends realism and atmosphere, drawing viewers into serene, dreamlike natural scenes.

  • Mark Price – With a thoughtful, layered approach, Mark’s plein air paintings often explore the emotional resonance of the land and memory.

  • Tom Maakestad – A nationally recognized artist whose aerial landscapes and signature soft palette have been featured in American Art Collector and beyond.

Each artist will choose a spot on the grounds to set up and paint. Visitors are encouraged to walk the trails, observe the creative process, and even chat with the artists as they work.
