Glass Chirpie Bird

Glass Chirpie Bird

Elizabeth Graceffo - Via Graceffo

Quote from Artist: "Non si po arrivare con le mani in tasca! This literally translates to "Don't arrive with your hands in your pockets!. When Elizabeth first heard this, she imagined someone standing at her door, hands in pockets because maybe they were cold? She didn't quite understand the underlying message. The look on her face said "huh?" and she was then told you don't arrive at someone's house with out a gift!"

This was the dilemma that faced the artist who makes the Murano Chirpie Bird. He was invited to a dinner at a friends' restaurant in Venice, Da Ivo, a fine dining establishment and he had no idea what to bring with him. He thought about his birds which have become increasingly popular around Murano and thought, I could make these a little larger, a little thicker, add some holes at the top and one at the bottom and turn them into salt and paper shakers. That was it! He spent the next few days studying how to best create the sturdiest and most beautiful salt and pepper shakers, that would be befitting a restaurant the status of Da Ivo. The night of the dinner came and the artist arrived with his newest creation in hand. The owner of Da Ivo loved them so much he ordered them to be placed on every table in the restaurant and extras to be given to special guests. Amongst the many recipients of the enchanting salt & pepper shakers were George Clooney, Brad Pitt and many well known Italian personalities.

About the Artist

Elizabeth Graceffo - Via Graceffo

Elizabeth Graceffo - Via Graceffo

Elizabeth Graceffo's favorite memories growing up involve family around a table; a table filled with Italian dishes and a cacophony of voices. She would sometimes place a recorder in the center of the table to capture the beautiful sounds of her Italian-American family; It was a thunderous symphony.

Upon her arrival in Florence, she felt immediately connected. The lyrical dance of the language had nuances from her Italian roots in upstate NY. It was warm and inviting like her grandmother's house and the intoxicating aromas from restaurants transported her back to her aunt's kitchen. The heart-beat of family is the table. As a junior at the American college in Florence, Graceffo started her life-long relationship with Italy. Six wonderful years later, she decided to return home and bring Italy with her. She started Via Graceffo with a few bucks in her pocket and the artistic connections she developed while living and working in Florence.
