Roger Becker
Roger and Jackie Becker carve and paint. Most of their carvings are from basswood which is a relatively soft wood that is close grained and leaves a smooth surface when cut with a knife or gouge. A cutout is created by tracing a pattern on the block of wood and cutting the outline with a band saw. For some carvings, a roughout is made from a master carving using a router-duplicator. Knives and gouges are used to refine the shape and add details and textures. This hand work makes every carving unique even though the form may be similar. When the carving is completed, it is coated with sanding sealer, painted with acrylic paints and sprayed with a sealer.
