Dark Colored Tortoise
Cathy and Carie Crain
Each tortoise starts with a slab of clay which is cut to the actual shape of the fish it will represent. Once the shape is established, more clay is added to highlight certain areas. Decorative designs are stamped and carved into the fish, the body, and fins to give dimensional shape and movement.
About the Artist
Cathy and Carie Crain
Cathy Crain has been an artist since she was old enough to hold a crayon and draw on the walls. After attending college as a sculpture major, she started a family and became a working artist. After Crain's two children went to college, she moved to Santa Fe, NM and began creating a line of one-of-a-kind garments and jewelry. Soon, her daughter, Carie joined as a partner. When the Crain's returned to Texas in 2005, they began a new adventure as a full-time studio artist. In 2012, Crain's granddaughter joined the studio.
As a designer, color, texture, and graphic details are the major theme in my work and animals are often the subject. I attempt to capture their humor, beauty, personalities, movements, and spirit in a new light by use of an unusual color palette and stylized images. This one-of-a-kind piece of art was hand sculpted in our Texas Studio. Cathy Crain hopes it provides enjoyment and inspiration for years to come.
